Sun tanning /Skin tanning / tan is the process of production of Melanin and Vitamin D by human body resultant skin color is darkened or tanned due to exposure to sun. It is mostly happen due to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight or from artificial sources, such as a tanning lamp found in indoor tanning beds.

Some people use chemical products which can produce a tanning effect without exposure to ultraviolet radiation, known as sunless tanning.

Moderate exposure to direct sunlight contributes to the production of melanin and vitamin D by the body, but excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays has negative health effects, including sunburn and increased risk of skin cancer

Nowadays market is stuffed with chemical based Skin Care Products, creams and face packs for the remedy of Skin tanning, however they may harm ones who have sensitive skin.

But don’t worry here are few home remedies which are going to help you in dealing with skin tanning.

Home Remedies to Remove Sun Tan from Your Face

1.Turmeric and gram flour mask (Besan)

One of the oldest Grandma remedies for tanning, a face mask made of turmeric and gram flour. It is an effective anti-sun tanning solution that will also get rid of marks and dark spots.


  1. two tablespoons of gram flour,
  2. a tablespoon of milk,
  3. chilled rose water,
  4. some grated orange peels or powder of dried orange peel, and
  5. a pinch of turmeric.
  6. Procedure to use it:

Very easy, mix all the ingredient in a bowl and apply on affected area then leave the mask on for 20 minutes. After 20 min scrub gently with a moist cotton ball, before washing off with cold water.

2. Lemon and Honey

Lemon along with honey do miracles in treating skin tanning problem. 

Lemon and honey have been used for many years to treat skin tans. Preparation time for lemon and honey face pack for skin tan is very less. After once you use this face mask you will find your glowing & shinning due to its bleaching effects.

Procedure to use it:

Prepare a mixture of fresh lemon juice and honey in a bowl. Mix well and apply this paste on your face. Let it stay for about half an hour and then wash your face.

3. Sandalwood

Sandalwood is a fine powder of stem of a tree also known as Chandan in India which also famous for its aromatic properties. This is again a very popular home remedy for skin tanning. This is not only good for Skin Sun tans but also useful for acne, pimple and other skin irritation problems.

 Procedure to use it:

Make a mixture of 2 tablespoon of sandalwood within equal portion of rose water. Apply the face mask on effected skin tan area then let it dry for 20 min. After 20 min scrub gently with a moist cotton ball, before washing off with cold water.

4. Honey and Papaya


Like lemon Papaya also have bleaching quality whereas honey give moisturization and soothing effect to the skin. This is also a good remedy to cure skin tanning.

Procedure to use it:

Mash half cup of papaya and mix one tablespoon of honey into it. Mix the mixture and apply on affected skin tans and leave it on for 30 min. After 30 min wash your skin with cold water.

5. Almonds


Generally, Almonds are known for good health and for healthy brain, but they are also good for your skin too. Almonds are rich in vitamin E and can fight skin tans and other skin problems.

Procedure to use it:

Make powder of 4-5 almonds and mix well them in a bowl with a tablespoon of lemon juice and a tablespoon honey. Apply the mixture for 20 min on skin tans. After 20 min wash the skin with cold water.

6. Aloe vera

Aloe vera is very famous and well known for its miraculous properties. Most of skin treatment products are manufacturing with the addition of aloe vera. Aloe vera plant is nowadays a very common plant and can be found in your neighborhoods very easily. This is very useful in treatment of skin tans.

Procedure to use it:

Take an aloe vera leaf and peel off its skin to take out the gel from it. Apply its on your face and neck. Leave it on for next 30 min and later wash it with cold water.

7. Tulsi (Basil leafs) and Multani Mitti (Fuller's earth clay)

Tulsi is well know for its anti- inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Basil leafs works like wonders to give you acne free skin. It kills the acne causing bacteria and disinfects the pores. It is also very useful for skin tanning problem solution.

Procedure to use it:

Take 4-5 leafs of green basil and mash it in one tablespoon of rose water. Now take 2 tablespoon of multani mitti and soak for 5-10 min. Then mix basil & rose water into soaked multani mitti and apply it on you skin tans for 20 min. After 20 min wash it with cold water.



Potatoes contain catecholase enzyme which reduce dark spots, blemishes and acne scars. It contains potassium which hydrates and moisturizes the skin. It is very useful for treating skin tanning.

Procedure to use it:

Grate a potato, squeeze it and extract its juice. Apply this juice on your face. Keep it for 2-5 minutes and wash your face with water.

9. Tomato


Tomato is rich in antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase properties, and useful for lighten the complexion and also protect the skin from damage. It is also very effective in Skin tanning treatment.

Procedure to use it:

Mash the tomato and apply this on your face. Keep it for 5-10 minutes and wash your face with water.

10. Cucumber


Cucumber isn’t just used for detoxification, they are good for skin problems too. Cucumber has a cooling effect and its extract is known to cure skin tanning and sunburn.

Procedure to use it:

Grind a cucumber and extract its juice. Apply this juice on your face using a cotton ball. Let it dry for some time and wash off.
